Musical Playdates for Babies “pre-walkers” with caregiver
Instructor: Alison Ackley
This beginning class for “pre-walkers” is a joyful introduction to music and will help strengthen the connection between parent or caregiver and baby. Utilizing songs and rhymes, sign language, creative play, and simple instruments, this class establishes a foundation for a lifelong relationship with music. Activities are geared towards non-walkers, so babies can explore, learn, and listen right from the start!

Musical Playdates for Toddlers ages 1 & 2 with caregiver
Instructor: Alison Ackley
This beginning class is a joyful introduction to music and will help strengthen the natural connection between music and movement, utilizing songs and rhymes, sign language, creative play, and simple instruments, while developing your toddler’s body awareness and control, listening skills, and exploration of space. Parents and caregivers will learn songs to help their children understand big emotions, manage transitions, and learn other important life skills.

Music & Movement for Preschoolers ages 3 & 4 with caregiver
Instructor: Alison Ackley
This class provides a joyful introduction to music and will help strengthen the natural connection between music and movement, utilizing songs and rhymes, creative play, and sign language, while developing your child’s body awareness and control, listening skills, and exploration of space. Children and their parent or caregiver will gain a basic understanding of rhythm and tempo, singing skills, improvisation with simple instruments, and a foundation for a lifelong relationship with music.

AGES 4-7
Beginning Group Violin Class, ages 4 –7
Instructor: Emily Bieker
An intimate beginning class, group violin introduces young children to their first exploration of this beautiful instrument. Children will gain a basic foundation of the violin and will begin learning music skills including note-reading, ear-training, and ensemble playing. Children learn in a small group setting with a maximum of seven students in the class. Caregivers are welcome to attend, but are not required. A violin is required for home practice.

Beginning Group Piano, ages 4 –7
Instructor: Yunona Tabala-Crofoot
This small class introduces a solid foundation of keyboard and music skills, including note-reading, ear-training, and ensemble playing while having lots of fun! Children learn in a small group setting with a maximum of five students in the class. A piano or 61-note keyboard is required for home practice. Caregivers are welcome to attend, but are not required. Note that piano books for this class are required and will be attached to your registration as part of the check out process.

NSM Choral Program
Ages 5 – 8 and 9 – 17
Director: Rachael Chagat
The Vision of the NSM Choral Program is to:
- Create literate musicians and instill artistic excellence through choral music.
- Provide its members with a broad experience of choral singing through music from different time periods, cultures, and genres.
- Foster musical independence, leadership, self-confidence, teamwork, discipline, and commitment in all singers.
- Enrich the lives of singers from all cultural and economic backgrounds.
Training Choir, ages 5-8
Singers will be introduced to the fundamentals of choral singing with focus on building the necessary skills of pitch-matching, listening, and rhythm. *This ensemble does NOT require an audition.
Saturdays, 9:00-10:00

Repertory Chorus*, ages 9-17
Emphasis in this ensemble will be on proper vocal technique, sight reading skills, aural training, and musicianship. Singers will explore and perform secular, sacred, and popular music as well as music from different cultures and genres. This ensemble will exhibit the highest level of music making and choral singing. *Membership in this choir is by (a very friendly) audition only. Audition materials can be foundhere.

Programs for Teens
Repertory Chorus, ages 9 – 17 (see above)
Teen Songwriting, ages 13 – 17
Instructor: Jack Byrne
In this class for beginner and intermediate teens, you will play your original songs in front of the group, and through discussion and constructive critiques, get ideas for how to grow as a songwriter. This class is a judgment-free and supportive space where you can feel free to explore your creativity and share your songwriting process with like-minded musicians. We will also dive into the lyrics and music of popular songwriters to gain a deeper understanding of how songs work. Whether you are looking to get your songs performance-ready for your first open mic, your 100th live performance, or you just want to get feedback on your songs, this class is here to help you achieve your songwriting goals.

Chamber Music, ages 13 – 18
Chamber Music Coordinator: Kai-Ching Chang
Chamber music for teens allows students to grow their musical skills in a small and fun ensemble setting with their peers. Coached by members of the NSM faculty, chamber groups explore new repertoire and ensemble techniques in a social and relaxed atmosphere.
