Born in Gardner, Massachusetts, Jef Charland (he/him) is a musician and private lesson instructor who resides in Newton, MA and performs and teaches in the surrounding area. He began his musical experience playing trumpet in elementary school and switched to guitar in middle school and his musical interest grew and musical tastes became varied. He went on to attend the Berklee College of Music and earned a Bachelor of Music in 1992. At Berklee, he studied with renowned guitarist Jon Damian and had a weekly gig at the historic Boston jazz club, Wally’s.


After graduating from Berklee, Jef took up independent study of the double bass and is now an in-demand bassist around the Boston area. He does a wide array of freelance work and is the regular bassist in a variety of ensembles including the jazz infused rock band The Blue Ribbons, jazz quartet Clear Audience, guitarist Lyle Brewer’s quartet, and the Gill Aharon Trio. Mr. Charland has performed in a variety of settings including the MDC Hatch Shell, Montreal Jazz Festival, Lizard Lounge, and on public radio station WGBH.
